The book is built around four visits that the author makes to a former girlfriend whose life is threatened by a serious illness and who is experiencing the most dramatic changes. During these visits, the author evokes the changes of the natural landscape that have taken place over the years, while telling also the story of the Swiss canton that he left a decade earlier but to which he still feels emotionally connected.
The author analyzes the changes of the environment, but gives also a critical account of the idealized descriptions that previous travelers have given of their stay in the region. His poetical take on the subjects as well as his reflections on the inevitable change and the ephemerality of all things are seen through the multiple lens of history, culture, illness, and friendship.
Four seasons, four chapters: such is the structure of this graphic novel which is neither a travelogue nor a diary or an autobiography, but something that combines all of these genres.
